The Holy Ones is about two groups of women; one within the Christian faith in a denomination called the Pentecostal Holiness Movement, and the other women who have left this group of believers. The series follows several individuals on their unique journey of faith as they live an life authentic to what it means to be a Pentecostal Holiness women set apart from the world, or navigating a world of discovering an identity outside of a faith that has taught her who she should be. The series documents the lifestyles of these women as they are finding themselves, and confronting their pasts. The movement is known for strict teachings and ridged lifestyle requirements of its followers, but especially of the females in the group. While some women find freedom in this faith, other women seek to find freedom and a sense of their own identity and self worth outside of a belief that’s closely shaped their worldview and sense of self.
Born and raised in the Pentecostal Holiness movement, I spent my summers in Pentecostal Holiness church camps with charismatic worship, and outpourings of the holy spirit, surrounded by devout followers of Christ who were saved, sanctified, and washed in the blood of Jesus. I fully left the lifestyle in my later teens, and returned to it a decade later to document the women across the US who are or had been influenced by this religious lifestyle.
